How do i put in buttons/images as links instead of just the words?

pretty much like what you have on this site. Like a image before the words "post an entry", "tutorials"

or both, a border (rectangle, oval,heart, star etc around the words "post an entry", "tutorials" etc) and maybe a small picture too.

I've got two problems that hopefully can be solved quickly. I'm fairly new to LJ so I really have no idea what I'm doing lol. Thanks to any help I can get!
